Our district includes six elementary schools and one high school nestled in scenic Northwest Connecticut.
 
Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher to join our team. The successful candidate will provide individualized instruction and support for students with diverse learning needs in grades EK–8. This role involves both resource room and classroom-based teaching, in close collaboration with general education teachers, service providers, and families.
 
Responsibilities:
Design and deliver individualized, data-driven instruction aligned with IEP goals

Work with students in small groups and one-on-one to support academic, behavioral, social, and emotional growth

Administer valid assessments to determine student performance levels and instructional needs

Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with state and federal regulations

Collaborate with general education teachers to create inclusive learning environments

Work closely with related service providers and behavior specialists (e.g., BCBAs) to tailor student programming

Lead and participate in Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings

Support and supervise paraprofessionals working in special education settings

Utilize specialized tools, technologies, and strategies to differentiate instruction

Perform other related duties as assigned

 
Qualifications:
Valid Connecticut teaching certification in Comprehensive Special Education (endorsement #165 or equivalent)

Wilson Language Training certification preferred

Strong communication and collaboration skills

Commitment to inclusive education and student-centered practices

 
Additional Requirements:
Successful completion of a comprehensive background check, including:
Educational verification of employment history

Department of Children and Families (DCF) background check

State and federal fingerprinting clearance

 
Working Conditions:
This is a full-time position in a supportive and collegial school environment, located in the scenic Northwest corner of Connecticut.

Physical Requirements:
The position requires the ability to:
 
Move about the classroom and school building as needed

Work with students at various physical levels (sitting, standing, floor-based activities)

Lift or assist students with mobility challenges, as necessary (up to 25 lbs)

Respond quickly to student needs in both classroom and non-classroom settings

Compensation & Benefits:
Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Housatonic Valley Regional Faculty Association.
